The verdict
Cadillac's traditional gas XT5 wins by $706 over 5 years against Cadillac's flagship EV. That is well within noise — for practical purposes the two vehicles arrive at essentially the same 5-year true cost to own for Margaret's specific driver profile. The interesting analysis is not the verdict but the decomposition, which reveals something specific about how luxury EV economics differ from mainstream EV economics.
Margaret saves $9,914 in fuel cost over five years — $10,664 in XT5 gasoline against $750 in Lyriq electricity (12 months × 5 years × $12.50 FPL subscription). FPL's EVolution Home program delivers the same "essentially-free unlimited off-peak charging" pattern that carries our Miami Equinox EV case. That fuel differential is substantial and does most of the work the Lyriq needs done. The problem is what the fuel differential has to cover.
Depreciation gap grows in absolute dollars at luxury tier. The $13,000 MSRP gap between the Lyriq and XT5 produces $6,884 in additional 5-year depreciation for the Lyriq at 14%/yr retention. Mainstream EV cases in our library carry smaller MSRP gaps ($3,500 in Miami, $2,700 in San Diego, $4,200 in Boulder-vs-Platinum) and therefore smaller absolute depreciation impacts. The percentage rates are similar; the dollars are not.
Insurance premium grows in absolute dollars at luxury tier. Same percentage differential (luxury EV insures at roughly 25% premium to luxury gas) becomes a $3,000 dollar delta over 5 years at these price points, versus roughly $1,500 for mainstream comparisons. Florida's auto insurance market amplifies this further — the state has among the highest insurance costs in the country.
Maintenance savings don't materialize at luxury tier. This is the finding that surprised us. In our mainstream EV cases, EVs consistently save $1,000–$1,500 in 5-year maintenance versus gas equivalents. In Margaret's Lyriq case, the EV actually costs $735 more to maintain than the XT5 over 5 years. The Y4/Y5 spike Cadillac reports ($2,065 annually) reflects factory bumper-to-bumper warranty expiration combined with the first out-of-pocket high-end EV tire replacement. Luxury EV tires are genuinely expensive — wider, softer, wear faster, and are only available from a small number of manufacturers. When the "no oil changes" advantage runs into "premium EV tire replacement" reality, the mainstream EV maintenance thesis breaks down at luxury tier.
Net result: essentially tied. Fuel savings of $9,914 cover the depreciation gap ($6,884) plus insurance premium ($3,000) plus maintenance disadvantage ($735) with $705 falling short. Which rounds to the observed $706 XT5 advantage. The math is genuinely balanced on a knife's edge — not because either vehicle is uniquely favorable or unfavorable, but because the traditional EV advantage structure runs into different resistance at luxury tier.
For Margaret specifically: the decision is not primarily financial. Both vehicles arrive at similar 5-year cost. She should buy the one she actually wants to drive. If she likes the Lyriq's newer technology and the quieter cabin, she's not paying a financial penalty for that preference. If she prefers the familiar V6 refinement of the XT5 and doesn't want to change how she refuels, she's not losing money either. This is the rare case where the financial decision genuinely defers to personal preference.
For the library's broader pattern: Naples Lyriq is now our second essentially-tied case, alongside Seattle Ioniq 5 vs. Tucson. But the two ties arrive at their outcomes through fundamentally different mechanisms. Seattle was tight because Pacific Northwest utility economics combined with no state credit produced a close-MSRP mainstream comparison where the fuel differential barely covered a small depreciation gap. Naples is tight because luxury-tier economics compress traditional EV advantages (maintenance savings evaporate) while amplifying traditional EV disadvantages (depreciation and insurance grow in absolute dollars). Both are "buy either, the math is roughly a wash" outcomes. The reasons matter.
What could change this
- Higher mileage flips the outcome decisively. Margaret's 12,000 mi/yr sits at exactly the compression point where fuel savings barely cover the luxury EV disadvantages. At 15,000 mi/yr the Lyriq wins by $1,960. At 18,000 mi/yr the advantage grows to $4,626. Naples buyers who spend meaningful time driving to Tampa, Orlando, or Miami — or who use the vehicle as their primary daily driver rather than their retirement-second-car — land squarely in Lyriq-wins territory. The reverse is also true: at 10,000 mi/yr the XT5 wins by $2,483, and at 8,000 mi/yr the XT5 wins by $4,260. This case is more mileage-sensitive than mainstream EV comparisons.
- Skipping FPL EVolution Home enrollment moves gas ahead. Without the EVolution Home subscription, Margaret pays FPL standard residential rates (~14¢/kWh) for her Lyriq charging — 5-year electricity rises from $750 to $2,856 and the XT5 advantage grows to $2,812. Any Naples-area Lyriq analysis that doesn't assume EVolution Home enrollment substantially understates the EV case; conversely, buyers who fail to enroll leave meaningful savings on the table.
- Federal $7,500 credit reinstatement flips the outcome to a decisive Lyriq win. If the federal EV credit returns through legislation or executive action, the Lyriq wins by $6,794 over 5 years. Combined with Lyriq eligibility (MSRP under the historical $80,000 cap on SUVs), a restored federal credit would put the Lyriq in genuinely favorable territory rather than tie-adjacent territory. Whether reinstatement happens during Margaret's ownership horizon is uncertain.
- Lyriq retention performance is the largest single unknown. Our 14%/yr depreciation assumption reflects new-model luxury EV uncertainty for a vehicle in its third production year. If Lyriq retention firms up to 12%/yr (approaching typical luxury gas retention, plausible if Cadillac's pricing discipline holds and Lyriq demand strengthens), the Lyriq wins by $3,019. If retention weakens to 16%/yr (typical of some new-EV entrants that faced pricing pressure), the XT5 wins by $4,100. This is a $7,000 sensitivity range on a single variable, larger than any other lever in the analysis.
- Trim choice within the Lyriq lineup reshapes the case dramatically. Our analysis uses Lyriq Luxury 1 AWD at $65,000. Cadillac offers performance-focused tiers (Sport 3, V-Series) that reach $83,795 delivered. At the $83,795 tier, the XT5 wins by $14,159 — the additional depreciation and insurance on the higher-priced Lyriq overwhelm the identical fuel savings. Lyriq shoppers should be honest with themselves about which trim they're actually buying; a Sport 3 or V-Series is a lifestyle purchase, not a financial one.
- The maintenance profile diverges more from mainstream expectations than most Lyriq shoppers realize. Cadillac's scheduled maintenance for the Lyriq is exceptionally light in Years 1–3 ($244, $244, $417 annually per Cadillac data) — shoppers often extrapolate this trajectory forward and undercount their 5-year cost. The Y4/Y5 jump to $2,065 annually reflects factory warranty expiration combined with expensive premium EV tire replacement, and it is not optional. Any Lyriq financial planning that models forward from Y1-Y3 maintenance alone will materially understate 5-year cost.
