EV vehicle rebates and tax credits by state

State purchase rebates and tax credits for new and used electric vehicles, with standard and income-qualified amounts, price caps and funding status. The federal $7,500 credit is not currently active, so state and utility money now decides most incentive math.

The short answer

  • The federal new clean vehicle credit (up to $7,500) and the used credit (up to $4,000) ended for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, according to the IRS. They are not currently active. Drive Economics calculators default the federal field to $0.
  • 11 state programs are active in our repository across 11 states. Most standard amounts fall between $750 and $3,500; income-qualified tiers reach $7,500.
  • Several well-known programs have closed: California’s statewide Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, Vermont’s state incentive, Washington’s and New Jersey’s sales tax exemptions, and Pennsylvania’s rebate. Texas runs yearly application windows.
  • Price caps matter as much as amounts. Many programs exclude vehicles above $50,000 to $55,000 MSRP.

Program maximums from the Drive Economics incentive repository, updated Oct 25, 2026. Amounts are not additive across programs unless each program says so.

Using these amounts in a cost comparison

Enter the amount a buyer actually qualifies for in the State and utility incentives field of the EV vs. Gas calculator or the EV Cost calculator. Both prefill a starting value from this repository when a ZIP code is entered, and the field stays editable.

Amounts are program maximums. Income limits, price caps, funding windows and whether programs can be combined all change what a specific household receives. As utility deep dives are added, this repository will also produce an “up to” total by ZIP code.
